Despite his character dying at the end of the first. They are basing the sequel on an alternate ending scene from the DVD release which had his character surviving.

Will Smith shared new details about “I Am Legend 2,” which he stars in and produces alongside Michael B. Jordan, on Saturday night at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The upcoming sequel is based on the alternate ending used in the 2007 post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie’s DVD release, rather than its theatrical version, in which his character dies, according to Smith.
“I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close, script just came in,” Smith said of “I Am Legend 2” at one of the festival’s In Conversation events. “You have to be a real ‘I Am Legend’ buff to know this, but in the first, theatrical version, my character dies, but on the DVD there was an alternate version of the ending where my character lived. We are going with the mythology of the DVD version. I can’t tell you anything more, but Michael B. Jordan is in.” -

Yeah I just found out about this.

But…that was not the ****ing ending that went out, on all the DVDs and in all the cinema screenings he ****ing died, he is dead! everyone who watched the films watched him die and now they are just like

It just baffles me how badly canon is treated in films these days, nobody gives a **** about it at all and if it gets in the way of their own " super awesome ideas " then it just gets thrown out, **** the questions that will arise from it right? just dont think about it.

Yeah, they killed the Terminator, Star Wars and Alien franchises.
You just have to ignore what they throw at you and make up your own mind what is canon or not.
