You're seriously expecting me to name every good movie of the past 25 years before I've had coffee?

          Bentley’s Wife — 7 months ago(August 14, 2025 11:32 AM)

Almost every movie made after 2000 is good, that’s when technology significantly improved and directors weren’t limited to making boring ass “talky” films. Action movies took a huge leap forward as did animated and cinematography in general.

CGI ruined the Star Wars prequels.

The original trilogy was boring in my opinion, the action was bland and mediocre. The prequels were vastly better.

Next you'll be saying Jar Jar Binks should have won an Oscar.

Jar Jar Binks was a better character than Luke Skywalker, I have no problem saying that.

Reluctantly must disagree. The less technology invariably makes the better film. Directors get more creative when faced with constraints and limits.
This is why -for example –James Bond movies always had verve, because you knew the stunts were for real.
It's also why film noir is as great as it is. Low budget was always the driving force behind noir.
High-tech was never needed throughout most of Hollywood history; and by this I mean the period of Hollywood history which counts the most: that being when most movie-goers were grown adults. Working men and women.
Eye-popping special FX were always available whenever they were truly needed, for example "
                      Wizard of Oz"
                      which still looks terrific. Or,
"Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"
                      .
                      I'd even argue the Korda B&W 1940 "
                      Thief of Baghdad"
                      or the Archers'
"A Matter of Life and Death"
both have more storytelling magic than anything made by a computer.
                      And of course,
                      "Forbidden Planet"
                      and "
                      A Space Odyssey"
still look better than anything made today.
The bottom line: since adults obviously have deeper tastes than kiddies, pre-Lucas Hollywood should always rate higher than post-Lucas.
Why? Because a kiddie-centric Hollywood means a diet of hi-sugar, babyfied choices compared to the vast array of storylines which can interest grown adults.
It's disingenuous to style fifty years of Hollywood magic simply as "
                      more talky"
                      .
William Goldman lays all this down in his first industry expose'. I'm not just speaking subjectively here.
