Please allow me to add two points to this discussion that may have bearing on the issue. I do like a lot of the westerns from this period but have learned not to expect a lot in the way of authentic element in these movies and TV shows. It looks like not much effort was put into making sure the facts matched the plots or the period in which these movies were set. Less effort was involved in ensuring that actors' costumes and appearances and grooming was compatible with the era. Also, as noted here, the Apaches were probably not in the neighborhood either. I have learned that if I am to enjoy movies like this, I have to overlook such issues.
I have always admired Sterling Hayden as an actor and his service in WWII. That is quite a story in itself. He stepped up and served beyond the call of duty. I also see him like Robert Mitchum that both them saw acting as a way to make a living and have the money to do the other things that they wanted to do. I really don't think either one was stuck on himself and I think both of them never forgot where they came from and the fans that put them where they were. Rest in peace. Well done. -

The Apaches knew of the Henry rifles on the wagon train that were being sold to one of the tribes that they didn't get along with.
This is one of those movies that I wished had a more wrapped ending! with questions answered like what he army done to him!
