โ 3 years ago(January 10, 2023 08:55 PM)An interesting thing about these witch trials were that they had little to do with actual witchcraft or religious fanaticism among puritans in Salem. It was just people taking advantage of an existing system, mob mentality and fear to get rid of people they didnโt like. Sarah has a happy marriage and more kids than you? Accuse her of being a witch. The prettiest girl in school is getting all the attention ? Accuse her of being a witch. You hate the couple down the street? Accuse them of casting a spell on you. Once a certain amount of people believe it it became impossible to stop the accusations because anyone attempting to defend a witch or disagree with the accusation must also be a witch.
This exact scenario repeated itself multiple times in history with Mccarthyism during the red scare and modern day cancel culture on social media outlets. If a celebrity gets โcancelledโ for saying something offensive or inflammatory to a large enough group of people they become too radioactive to defend without risking your own cancellation.
