It's fairly straightforward, once you know that to add (or subtract) fractions you have to find the common denominator of the terms involved. In this case the common denominator between the given denominators 4 and 2 is 4, so you 'rephrase' the individual terms accordingly
5 + 3/4 = 20/4 + 3/4 = 23/4 first term
2 + 1/2 = 4/2 + 1/2 = 5/2 = 10/4 second term
meaning the result is
23/4 - 10/4 = 13/4
PS: This isn't really what people typically call math, by the way; it's basic arithmetic. -

Everyone needs a tutor for everything in the beginning, the only question being what use you want to make of him: have him solve individual problems for you or teach you the problem solving skills you need to solve them yourself, so you don't have to depend on anyone else in the future.
In this case, I admit that it takes a little effort initially to wrap your head around the basic principle, but once it's understood it suddenly becomes very natural and easy to apply. -

Don't bear yourself up about it. I can't remember **** from school. It was years ago, mind
I have to ask my daughter when it's anything complicated.
Her bf is studying math at uni along with physics and whatever else. -

Ikr. Even my daughter is like he's insane for doing it lol.
They don't teach kids these days like how they taught us. We got flung in a classroom with zero support and to fend for ourselves. If you didn't know anything it was tough **** lol.
These days they're pulling a level papers out of their ass to study with in high school.
If only we were born 10 years later, eh
