At least in this episode they filled in many of the blanks that many of these shows leave out, where you end up with more questions than answers. The police did tell Christine's (the victim) mother, Lynn, that Christine was a sponge on the system and probably had simply ran off leaving her two kids behind to avoid an arrest for child abandonment (which they were trying to get her on that charge anyway if she hadn't been murdered).
I did wonder how was Christine able to take off from her mother's house and travel to a friend's house 90 miles away staying there for a week or two. I'm thinking, with 2 kids, didn't she have a job? Apparently, not. Then her mother lectured the police for saying this about Christine even though it was the truth. Usually the parent will take in their kids and grandkids and financially support them if the children are unable. Apparently the mother, Lynn, was also on some sort of government aid herself and was unable to do that. She only looked to be 50 or 55, years away from retirement and it was never said if she had a husband or a job. She's one of those people that should be on Judge Judy and let Judy grill her about all of that.
