Named after explorer Amerigo Vespucci. (Would Columbia have been better?

no doubt they sound similar. as does "amaruca", "la mercia", "la merica" and "la murica".
in reality, these sorts of narratives are easier to swallow when we composite already existing narratives.
and that amerigo story was from a german who decided to name it after an italian and apparently the spanish and the portuguese hated it so the mapmaker dropped it almost immediately. there is only that 1507 map that had it.
you might say, "well, that was first!" but the point is, the natives calling themselves americanos was what really did it. and they were really calling themselves "amarucanos", but the europeans (where the history is made) interpreted that later as "America".
