You mean that scene towards the end with Hachi and Joan Allen didn't make you tear up?
Animals always make me cry. Even the animated ones

At the end, when the dog died, it was sad. Same thing with the other movie. I had more problems with general presentation. The Japanese one, nobody but the professor cared about the dog. They had no time for him. All of that was pretty much thrown out in the remake. Joan Allen showed a bit, but it wasn't as bad as the Japanese. I'm sure that's the truth back then, yet it was annoying to see.

How cold that no one else cared about the dog
Gere developed a strong, real-life bond with the dogs (Chico, Layla, Forrest) who played Hachi, enhancing the emotional depth of these scenes.

Gere did a good job. He made the movie better. That was lacking in the Japanese big time.
