For me it's "that scene" in

The woman being thrashed about the water in darkness? Yeah. Those screams are real. I can't remember if it was something to do with the machine thrashing her about or something else. I read about it years ago.

IRREVERSIBLE
(2002) - The Scene when Monica Bellucci's character is attacked, raped, and nearly beaten to death.
SCREAM
(1996) - The Scene at the Beginning when Drew Barrymore's character gets killed.
28 WEEKS LATER
(2007) - The Scene when Robert Carlyle's character attacks and kills Catherine McCormack's character. -

I've never understood what makes the rape scene in "Irreversible" any worse than any other rape scene. Is it because the damn thing goes on for almost ten minutes?
I think the rape scene in "Frenzy" is far more upsetting.
I do agree with you on DB's death scene in the original "Scream".

I haven’t seen “Irreversible”, but from what I feel, I think it’s just shallow trendy to cite this film’s rape because it’s happening to a dude I believe.
Or those that hype it, have no point of reference for other films with notorious rapes which came before it.
The rape in
Frenzy
is skilfully and disturbingly presented that was perhaps a first for a mainstream movie.

I definitely agree with your second paragraph.
I know you haven't seen the movie (no loss), but it's a woman who is raped. I think she is sodomized. I don't think I'm being callous when I say that its extreme length makes it feel like pure sensationalism.
Now, there is a scene in an s&m gay bar, where all sorts of extreme stuff is going on in the back room, including beating a man to a bloody pulp with a fire extinguisher. Frankly, I found that scene so much more disturbing than the rape scene. Thought that scene, too, was total overkill. He smashes the guy on the head I'd say about 20 times while all the other sickos are standing there, watching it take place and getting off on it.
And as if that wasn't enough, the camera shakes horribly all throughout the scene in the bar. It literally gave me motion sickness.
I think it's a terrible movie.

I despise Shakey Cam. I have walked out of movies, or had to close my eyes because of this kind of self-indulgent and cheap shot camera work. Rather watch
Earthquake
and they did a better job of it.
I Spit On Your Grave
has prolonged rape and sodomy scenes in both versions I think, and they are disturbing to watch, but I never cared to see
Irreversible
, because it just looked too sensationalized and millennial stylized. I never cared much for French movies either.
There is one French film I wouldn't mind seeing. Have to check if it is on here….
The Wounded Man - '83 'L'homme blessé.
It is a younger man older man attraction who is a petty thief. Have you seen Mr. Hutch?
This is a review from IMDB:
An erotic film to make you weep
Before "Betty Blue", the male star of that film - JH Anglade - made this even darker romance about the love of a naive, desperately lonely young man for an older male hustler. Its a beautiful film with relaxed nudity and highly erotic sex scenes between the excellent male leads.
But its also a very dark and sinister movie. Its a film of extreme passions with a raw, violent finale which is poignant as well as disturbing. Its a film which contemplates the collision of impassioned, yearning-for-love youth with the jaded, cynical ruthlessness of youth lost in the figure of the older hustler. Its not a pleasant film but its nonetheless one of the most highly charged erotic gay films ever made with an intelligent script and a powerful narrative force as the two men seek to find their own way to survive. Anglade's heartfelt performance as the intense, brooding and determined young man is soulful.

I agree with your assessment that "Irreversible" is geared to appeal to pretentious millennials. The rape sequence in the 1978 ISOYG was very effective. Camile Keaton gave a mostly believable performance.
"L' Homme Blesse" sounds like a movie that I would love.
"An erotic thriller to make you weep".
Wow! I'm not positive, but I think it may be available for viewing here. Thank you for telling me about it!

28 WEEKS LATER (2007) - The Scene when Robert Carlyle's character attacks and kills Catherine McCormack's character.
That is the one when he visits her in the hospital, right?
And then it all goes downhill from there.
Yeah, for me the movie is watchable up to that point.
Though I do wonder what she was doing there unguarded and how he could have had high security clearance or access when he should not have.

Wait.
Isn't that movie infamous for a lot of disturbing scenes?
You didn't find any others disturbing?

Leonardo DiCaprio's death scene in Titanic
The scene in Zodiac where the couple is getting killed. With the woman screaming during the killing, it's like if you were watching a REAL murder video!
The scene in Final Destination where the Stifler guy gets his head chopped off by the train-when he falls over, it made my stomach nauseous.
What about the scene in Human Centipede with the tossing salad line?
