Does practicing on my own before playing others improve my game, or is the aiming a bit off and unrealistic?
Example, I tried a safety shot by gently as i could hitting side of rack when no other shot or ball was available. I set him up and i conceded with 99 points left on table.
I only sunk 3 balls, 2 reds and a brown, on the red i missed 6 points blue

        Beastly shot.
        How did Robertson escape that?

Well, Neil Robertson didn't escape it. He tried a couple of times but conceded. Judd Trump got that frame, later the match (6-4) and ended up winning the Dafabet Masters for his first time
All from a fly safety shot
When you are playing pool you are only ever playing against yourself. It's what you've got on the table in front of you and how you are going to leave it for the next guy.
I much prefer pool, a lot quicker and the off-table tactics are glorious
