Has anybody here ever actively nurtured and 'farmed' Monarch butterflies?

I've done it for years. Their whole life cycle is intriguing and amazing. You can get really attached to the caterpillars, and to see them eventually turn into butterflies is very satisfying.

We use to do that when we were kids. Take a jar, poke holes in the lid and put grass inside the jar with a caterpillar. It was fun to check up on it every few days. We occasionally got moths, but usually, it was beautiful butterflies.
I showed my son when he was little too.
You are right. It's very satisfying.
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

As they get much older, they lose a lot of that dust anyway. Sometimes their wings are almost transparent, and they can still fly. This isn't something I've read - This is something I've observed over quite a few years. In fact, their wings can be tattered and torn, but they'll go on flying until there's hardly anything left.
