How did that rumor get started in the first place?

Oh, yes. There are a few events:
- Back when I was about 16/17, I was taking a bath, relaxing in it. At some points, I dozed off and passed out on the bathtub. Then I woke up and I was suddenly paralyzed in fear and there was invisible presence hovering right above me, staring into my soul. I couldn't see it, but I
know
something is there, watching me. I couldn't move. For a while, I could have sworn I saw outline of the invisible figure, but it was faint and quick. I know if I hadn't been deaf, I might have heard it. Then in a minute or two, it was gone and I was free from whoever/whatever held me on its grasp. - I don't remember this but there are a few stories about when I was very young and I spoke to my great grandfather who died before I was born. I scared everyone at the big dinner. I can't remember much details, but apparently I told my grandparents as well as my mother like the description and some things they only know. I can imagine the dead can use children to pass on the messages.
And trust me, they're
not
imaginary friends. If you have children who speak to "invisible" friends, trust me. They are speaking to ghosts. - Occasionally, I'd get the visitor after I wake up. For example, I saw that weird figure hovering across my bedroom before disappearing through the wall (even my cat followed it and stopped at the wall, looking confused). Another is being physically touched as if something just stroke on my arm and my leg. It was almost sensual. If there's the horny male ghost crushing on me, well I don't mind sitting here naked.
Just recently, there were floating hands. Normally they don't scare me, but that scared the **** out of me and I stormed out of my bedroom and relaxed in the kitchen where there was a light above the sink for a few moments. And I was alone, except the cats and dogs.
Even once I went to hell.
I hope a bear throw a book at you, moon at you, and do a tap dance wearing a thong and leather boots.

Personally, I don’t believe in ghosts, ghouls or any such nonsense that has no scientific proof. Nowadays pretty much everyone has a good camcorder in their pocket. And not one person has been able to document proof? Lol come on.

What you’ve described there is a pretty typical example of sleep paralysis.
And it wasn't the only time. I had it several times, just rare. And it's known that if you wake up and you see something, they're usually dream beings……usually. Sometimes, there are really supernatural beings nearby because they can't be explained because there are theories that if you're still in sleep state, the veil between the other side and this world can become thin and they become visible for a short time. Sleeping on your back can trigger sleep paralysis, which is what happened at the bathtub, because I was sleeping on my back. But it doesn't change the fact that the outline of the invisible figure was there, just hovering there, looking at me before it disappeared right before I was released. It may be a dream, it may not be. My sister also had it and once, she said there was a woman standing in her bedroom, watching her sleep.

Edit: I realize you're talking about the second one, not the third one. Apologies. Let's talk about the second one. I agree, that's what I told my relatives, they should have recorded the scenes. That was way back in the early 90s, though. If we had smartphones back then, there would definitely be footage. Most of my friends and relatives did experience paranormal scenes and even they wished they had recorded it so they could be believed. For example, one of my friends experienced a picture moving by itself, sliding across the fireplace mantel shelf. Another one (I can't remember who told this) is the dark figure and when you blink, it disappeared.
And yes, I'd definitely install the camera in my bedroom. If whoever watches the footage of a floating hands waving at you or wiggling fingers at you, I imagine you'd be creeped out.
