Eating them raw tastes bland and slippery. What's the point?

Yeah that's what I thought the first time that I tried Clams.
But it wasn't gross. It just doesn't have much flavor even though I selected garlic flavor. They didn't taste like garlic and sucking the meat from the shell is messy. I don't usually like messy foods that I have to use my hands to eat and it getting on my face.
