The lyric goes, "Now he's on the mend, when he used to make it talk so tough." I know "on the mend" means getting over being sick or hurt, but does it mean something different for guitar players? Is it musician slang for something else?

Tommy's got his six-string in hock
Now he's holding in what he used to make it talk
      So tough, it's tough

      ???
edit: of the four write-ups of the lyrics I looked at, 3 of the 4 show "
      what
he used to make it talk So tough" - one showed "
      when
he used to make it talk So tough" but all four showed "Now he's holding in", none of them show the lyric as "Now he's
      on the mend
      ".

His music was his means of expressing himself. He can no longer do so now that his guitar is in the pawn shop.

Yep Marla is right. Here's a clip of the song with the lyrics so you can hear and read yourself.
I'm writing this signature in bold so people know it's a signature
