Why film in an old format of film?

Why film in an old format of film?
The idea stated in IMDb was to create an old look. I do not notice this old style look with the film that they used.
With so many filters available with digital processing, I think they wasted money.
How do you all feel about seeing a picture presented in 1.66:1?
