I am thinking it is possible Emily could not get pregnant, and she and Richard did indeed adopt the gardeners child. It would explain why she is so different than both of themplus there still seems to be something unwritten about their trouble. Is Emily resentful Lorelai is not her real child? That an adopted child ended up pregnant at 16 and running away? Who wrote the nasty letter to Emily if it wasnt Lorelai? Maybe the gardener was the dad and a maid the mom and they wrote it? Why would anyone start a rumor like that to begin with? Plus, it would explain why Emily was so uptight and nasty to the helpnot just because she was rich, but that she needed one of them to provide the one thing she could not have. Since Richard is dead, she drops the charade, sells the mansion, quits the DAR, takes in the Berta and her family, kind of makes ammends with how nasty she was and is herself for once.

Not buying it. In the original series Emily said she was in labor for 14 hours and that's not something a woman makes up, nor ever forgets. Lorelai would never admit it but she is more like her mother than she wants to believe.

Agreed. Also, Emily's face while she was hearing this didn't say "busted!" It said: "Good lord, where do they get this stuff, and how sad that a kid tormented you with something so cruel and absurd."
