Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life

I watched the whole series twice. First, when it came out, and then this year.
I watched A Year in the Life.
Sure, Emily was a typical rich corporate wife/mother who was a stickler for rules, etc., but Lorelai's hate for her seemed like it should be for someone who pimped her own daughter or something.
Emily made her wear frilly dresses, sent her to the best private schools, etc. Maybe did not give her too much affection, sure, but Lorelai's aversion was over the top.
    What am I missing here?

Agree. It was better in the revival. But I always think Lorelai treated her mom unfairly. Especially given that without her parents help, Lorelai and Rory wouldnt be where they are now. They are blind to their own privilege.

She's controlling, judgmental, unforgiving, hypocritical, self centered, and she's never willing to admit to her faults or apologize for them. Lorelai shares a few of these faults herself, but they didn't come out of nowhere. She learned them from Richard and Emily.

What are you missing? A lot.
I think people get blinded by the fact that Emily is such an entertaining character. I don't think she's a horrible person or anything, but she is an extremely manipulative and judgmental mother. She never respected Lorelai's choices. Rory is 32 years old (THIRTY-TWO YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!) and she is still harping about how Lorelai handled her pregnancy.

You're definitely missing a lot. Maybe a third watching wouldn't hurt.
None of them are without fault, just like any normal human being. They're very different people and don't communicate well. Sometimes it's Lorelai who's out of line other times it's Emily. You can't build a good mother-daughter relationship solely on money.

Emily is emotionally abusive to the extreme. I love her character too, but she and Richard were not good parents. There is more to being a parent then giving your child stuff. That was the problem. They were judgmental and oppressive and Emily wanted Lorelai to be a mini her. Didn't they want to force Lorelai to marry Christopher when she got pregnant?
Also, Lorelai left and didn't take anything from her parents until Rory was sixteen. I don't think that even remotely means that she owes them for everything.
