How would one go about defending himself in a situation like this?

In the novel that Edward has written, the incident at the highway was really disturbing in that he feels so powerless to stop the thugs from touching and taking his wife and daughter.
What are some ways of defending ourselves in a similar situation? -

The point is that in this particular situation it was quite obvious (to me) that honking was asking for trouble. Both purposeful jamming the road and honking are about balance of power, though the first one is kind of more vicious.

Carry a gun
Unfortunately, as we all know or should know, the gun-owner's daughter is statistically far more likely to have found the gun and accidentally shot herself, or her daddy, than it be used to defend the family against armed thugs. -

Cut the anti-gun (and anti-common sense) rhetoric. It's stupid, it has been debunked a thousands times before, yet anti-right to defend one's life loons still parrot it like it was their religion. What statistic are you talking about exactly?
A responsible dad, would have taken the daughter to a shooting course, learned all the safety measures and whatnot. So accidentally shot herself, no, that's just short-sighted and moronic. -

There are about 85-90 gun deaths per day in the USA. More than terrorism. Last year, more than 30 toddlers killed someone with a hand gun in the USA (I think it was 43?)
and yes "statistically" you are more likely to die to your own gun or kill your family than you are to defend yourself. But if you don't have a family you don't need to worry. -

Unless you're unconcerned by the possibility of shooting yourself by accident. Gun-owners always claim they are all vigilant with their weapons, but there are multiple videos on youtube of these idiots shooting themselves accidentally. -

As you know - or should know - NRA lobbying prevents the CDC from collating statistics on gun deaths. The Washington Post and other private sources have gathered information which reveal 34 innocent people die by gunshot for every criminal killed in self defense.

@ tigerfish50
either way, being anti-gun is pretty much anti-American if you ask me.
just because some bad things happen with guns you can't penalize all of the gun owners because of it like the liberals want to do who pretty much want to ban guns if they had the power to do so. thank God for the NRA
also, guns can be used for sport or hunting etc. not all of it is self-defense even though it's still nice to have one for self defense just in case you get into a bad spot as without a gun your pretty much screwed where as if you got one at least you got a chance.
also, if you stopped the average person from owning a gun then basically all of the criminals would have them and if they know the common person is much less likely to be armed they might be more likely to do stuff they otherwise would not do like break into peoples homes etc.

Man, posting a Washington post source. No bias there, eh?. Guess I should post a NRA source.
I'll just leave this here, an actually objective source:

BTW, you continue to ignore the fact that a woman the age of his daugther would be ver unlikely to be playing around with guns.
