She said the opening went well, so apparently the majority thinks this is art.
You're obviously a bit of a country bumpkin, and have no idea how people behave at high end art galleries. Attendees at these events flatter the curator.
In addition, Americans are particularly ignorant about art - they make flattering comments when they don't understand something.
