In the late seventies to early 1990 I was married to a man born and raised in post war Germany and lived with him there in 1979. He was born in 1945, so he grew up in some pretty rough years. Through out the 1980s he kept up his subscriptions to Stern and a newspaper from Munich. So I was more aware of the inner workings of German culture and politics than most Americans. My former husband had "Green" leanings and was a great admirer of Petra Kelly - so much so, I think he had a crush on her!
Although Martin/Moritz was a bit too much a baby James Bond, so much of the show still rang true for me. The show helped me remember a lot of my German, a language I had studied, but promptly forgot after I divorced my fiormer husband.
My hope for the 1986 and 1989 series would that it explores the crumbling of East Germany. The crumbling began well before the wall crumbled down so dramatically in 1989. The Pan European Picnic foreshadowed the fall of the Wall and would be a must feature in a Deutschland '89 series.
For Deutschland '86 the Chernobyl incident would have to feature prominently as it it affected all of Europe, not just the Ukraine. One of my college professors was in Berlin waiting to change planes for Kiev when the disaster hit. He never made it to Kiev and he returned to the USA a very disappointed man.
The show should have a story line featuring Petra Kelly played by an actress, not just in news clips.
For both '86 and '89 I would like to see how Martin, Annette, Ingrid and Yvonne mature and are affected by the changes in both Germanys. In the last scenes it looks like Thomas was about to begin a new life in the West. I'd like to see a story line centered around him and his life in the West. My former husband had a friend named Rolf who was part of an East-West prisoner exchange. Rolf was more of a mental illness case than a real dissident and the East Germans were happy to be rid of him and happy to get one of their high power spy in return. But I am sure people like Thomas were the rule and guys like Rolf were the exception.
I also hope Martin and Annette's child is also featured in the sequel serieses. Their child would be part of the first generation to go to school in a united Germany and grow up with freedoms neither Martin or Annette ever knew.
I also hope that Martin exhibits some feelings of guilt over the two deaths he was complicit in causing. He may not have run Linda over with the car or pulled the trigger on her boss, but he set the fires nonetheless. Martin somehow must atone for his role in the double tragedies.
That's about it.
