Who stopped watching the show when they started pushing the gay story line between Maggie and Alex? Even though I knew it was gonna happen it's too blatant to ignore and it's so pushed and forced that it doesn't look realistic. The politics on this show make me turn away as is. I wish there was a show that had already established gay characters shown in a more normal light. Living their lives. Not making being gay such an issue. Berlanti seems to be stuck in the past. I'm not watching the show as much as I used to and this is one of the main reasons. Berlanti seems to think that being gay or coming out is still a struggle. Maybe 30 years ago not anymore.

I agree.after years of watching Arrow, Flash and now supergirl .couldn't get into legends I decided the other night to delete them from my dvr and move on. The whole forced gay character to be politically correct and stay relevant is annoying I don't want to watch Karas sister struggle with her gay identity. I hate when they work in things where the characters go out of their way to let everyone know they're gay and they have a partner and there happyI don't care. half the time the characters sexuality has nothing to do with their purpose in the show. If it did it would be fine. They are just trying to be trendy and present gay life style as a completely normal thing to show the gay audience they are accepted by their heros if I was gay, I wouldn't be annoyed, I'd probably be insulted. Besides this deal the story lines of both shows has become too cartoon like. Arrow was great first two season and now it's a joke recruiting kids and street fighters as heroes ridiculous. Dead in a heartbeat. I had hard enough time with Roy and speedy becoming ninjas. At least Roy had the super soldier drug in his system and speedy had a ninja dad..I watch black sails and the gay story there was almost a similar trigger for me but as it unfolded, it was an integral part of the story and a catalyst that shaped characterstotally acceptable and we'll written..
You want to send a gay love acceptance message? Make Oliver Queen gay ahh. Won't do it will you? It's all bs and I'm done with it for now. -

This is funny.
Really, being gay and coming out isn't difficult these days?? Because people like Pence who support conversion therapy of LGBT youth and a bill to allow discrimination against gays to protect "religious freedoms" and Trump who included the desire to appoint a Conservative Supreme Court justice in the hopes of overturning the gay marriage ruling in his campaign push (which he has since reversed that sentiment) proves that even in 2016- gays are NOT widely accepted. And yes- it's a huge struggle because of that fact. Unless you've walked in those shoes, please don't assume to know how easy it should be. Many people still hate gays, plain and simple. Look at the backlash and nasty posts on this board alone!!

Ah! You're right! I must stop watching now too. Now that you mention it- someone has a beer or wine or scotch or something almost every episode! Gasp!

You're an idiot.
Really, being gay and coming out isn't difficult these days??
It's not. The vast majority of people just don't care. If they do care, then they are mentally ill.
Trump who included the desire to appoint a Conservative Supreme Court justice in the hopes of overturning the gay marriage ruling in his campaign push (which he has since reversed that sentiment) proves that even in 2016
Nope. He wanted a conservative appointment in order to follow the constitution. The very same piece of paper that Obama wanted to tear up. Notice that now Trump getting into power. We are hearing of the Obama presidency not following the law/constitution in many respects.
Also, Trump has said. "It's done, it's a settled matter". With respect to Gay rights. He wants the country to move forward with him.
Many people still hate gays, plain and simple. Look at the backlash and nasty posts on this board alone!!
No, many people like myself roll eyes or laugh at how a character is written or they retcon a character to be gay. It's really about how it's handled.
I couldn't care less if a character is gay or not. I think the White Canary is awesome. But I don't like the instance of every single episode to remind me she is gay. I couldn't care less! I suspect, many other people don't!

Well your rude opening statement completely negates the remainder of your post and makes you seem foolish. I'm not an idiot and based on your opening sentence, I can assume that I have more education than you. No need to be rude when people are discussing a topic in a congenial way.
Check your info again- Trump DID in fact, at one point, state that as a man who believes in "traditional marriage", he would be interested in appointing a Supreme Court judge willing to challenge the gay marriage ruling. I know it's hard to keep his points of view straight since he has flip flopped so much and has since retracted those sentiments.
The rest of your post is irrelevant because you've not lived one minute in the shoes of the gay population, so all you have to offer are misguided assumptions. Best to not speak of that which you don't understand, esp after your opening sentence- makes you seem ignorant and uneducated. People discriminate against gays, minorities, handicapped, developmentally disabled and those with mental health issues it just happens because not everyone is kind or understanding! It's just human nature and we really do need to rise above it if we're really going to unite as a Country! Peace.

Trump DID in fact, at one point, state that as a man who believes in "traditional marriage"
Check this article "Trump indicated he's "fine" with the high court's opinion legalizing same-sex marriage"
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/11/14/politics/trump-gay-marriage-abortion-supreme-court/
Look, someone can say they are traditional. In some respects, even I am traditional for some social issues. However, if I was elected to a certain office. I would respect other peoples beliefs. Something liberals just cannot seem to do. So back to Trump, he has said many times now. LGBTQ is settled, it's a done deal.
That's why I called you an idiot. Also, someone calling someone else an idiot is a respectfully fine thing to do. It does not disparage who is saying it. Maybe in your safe spacing bubble, where no one can make discourse, it does.
But remember, there are people in other countries who thankfully do not have space spaces or a population without back bones. Seriously, if you lived where I live now. You "millennial" wouldn't last 5 minutes!
I can assume that I have more education than you.
You can assume that, but you are wrong. Are you American? If so, you can only assume that I have a much higher education level. Go check

The US is 14th in the world. Trust me, I'm actually very smart.
The rest of your post is irrelevant because you've not lived one minute in the shoes of the gay population, so all you have to offer are misguided assumptions.
Again, you are assuming. I lived 5 years in San Francisco, I lived in the Castro district. I still have many gay friends. I lived 2 years in Orlando Florida, again I have friends there. I lived 2 years in London in the city zone 1/2. Again, many friends there.
Why do I have gay friends? I don't discriminate. I meet many people in all walks of life. I don't care about their political leanings, what sexuality they are, or what color their skin is or even gender. None of it matters. Just whether or not you are a decent human being.
Seriously, try not to speak about me or speak for me. You'll fail. Even my friends say I'm complicated and conflicted! Which is a good thing.

I've said twice now that Trump reversed his position on gay marriage. You can stop trying to prove that which I've already stated twice now. I get it, we all get it. But thanks.
Ps- I'm not millennial. And good for you having gay friends. Insert slow clap here. Unless you ARE gay, you don't know the struggles and triumphs personally. That's all.

Why should I care if I can't personally relate to the struggles and triumphs of being gay? If the story is forced and poorly written then it's forced and poorly written.
Also most people can relate in some way. Otherwise nobody would watch a show about a super powered alien. We know what it's like to get so caught up in a role we neglect our own wants. To deny or ignore about ourselves what society views as abnormal. To like someone and not have them like you back.
As long as the LGBT+ community treat their stories as exclusively theirs then the rest of the world will view them as other. -

Well you are quite right, if a storyline is poorly written, or perceived as being poorly written- the show could potentially suffer. (At least in the eyes of the beholder.) And yes- your personal experiences don't have anything to do with the acceptance of poor story telling, if that's what you feel is happening.
However, a large portion of my sentiments were directed at the fact that the previous poster was dismissing the difficulties of being gay these days, inferring that it should be easy being gay and coming out. That's all. We sort of got away from discussing the show itself and moved more on to personal opinions. I have mine and the previous poster has his/hers- I can respect that.
I've yet to comment on the legitimacy of the writing of Alex's storyline, but I can see that many people truly don't care that she's gay, they care that it seems to be a poorly written arc. I think it's written and playing out naturally, but I also feel as though it does take up a large percentage of screen time right now. For me, I don't mind, but I can see how some others may want less screentime on that topic and more screentime on the actual show about the alien fighting crime. I get it.

Well said.
We still face a lot of discrimination in our day to day lives and the suicide rates for homosexual people are very high here in Australia and many people blame that on bullying homosexual people face in schools, universities and the workplace which is at the highest it has been in the past 5 years. I have been lucky not to face any myself lately but I know of people that do and there was a guy that was killed by two people at his work just for being homosexual not far away from where I lived. I grew up with a homophobic Mother and Father who abandoned me when I came out and my Father was always putting homosexual people down when I was a kid and it made me hate myself and feel like a freak when I started having feeling for my best friend. Her parents were devout Christians and they have very old and outdated views about homosexuality and were very controlling and when they started to suspect there was something going on between us they wouldnt let her see me anymore. We are together now but we should have never been kept apart for all those years.
Unless you ARE gay, you don't know the struggles and triumphs personally
No. They don't and never will but the truth is they don't care 'cause they think we deserve the discrimination we have gotten over the years. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and it was really bad here in Australia back then and even though it is not as bad now same sex marriages are still not legal here thanks to our backwards Liberal government and to try and say it doesn't exist when it still happens every day shows how homophobic they are.

Thanks for the support. Being in America- I still face discrimination. I had a person in the healthcare field treat me horribly once she found out I was gay, only 1 year ago! And no, I didn't throw it in her face as some like to think gays do. She was making conversation, connecting with me as a patient, and asked about my personal life. The face she had when she found out was horrifying, her affect changed and she was no longer cordial or kind after that. So, the hate does still occur in this day and age, sadly.
I'm sorry you've faced such struggles, I know how hard it can be. My parents, while they weren't outwardly anti-gay, certainly were not supportive of it. My mom has since passed and my dad is now accepting. luckily. I feel for you, losing family due to your orientation. Sad.

Not necessarily true. You can be not-homophobic (or even gay, shocking) and still have an issue with how gay characters are presented, for a variety of reasons. And that's without even putting ideologies into the mix.
You're suffering from delusions of adequacy.
