New series starts on Monday at 9pm on BBC4.
Once upon a time, tales of hard-boiled detectives or barbarians questing for treasure were thought to be embarrassing when compared to proper books. But genre fiction is no longer considered low-rent and is now recognised as encompassing some of the most intelligent and important works of literature, while still being irresistible page-turners. Skilful writers such as George R.R. Martin, Agatha Christie or John Le Carré know exactly how to subvert the familiar tropes of these worlds and continue to surprise us, drawing us ever deeper into their fiction.
It is these genre conventions that avid Game of Thrones fan Andrew Marr will deconstruct in a brand new BBC Four series, Sleuths, Spies & Sorcerers: Andrew Marrs Paperback Heroes. Spread across three episodes, he examines the most popular genres - detective stories, spy thrillers, and fantasy fiction - and works out what makes them so effective at capturing our imagination.
The common currency of such stories has always been the paperback. Fittingly, these exciting works often feature some of the most eye-catching artwork, which changes subtly with each era. Here is just a selection of the most enticing cover art drawn from various best-selling paperbacks of genre fiction. And if any of these images pique your interest, all the books are explored in greater detail in the series.
