While the core actors/actresses obviously move along the narrative of the various story lines, we have noticed that one of the aspects that makes this show seem "real" is the casting and utilization of extras. Some of these one or two scene actors have little but rather meaty roles. Has anyone noticed this?
I'm thinking about Season 3 episode 1 in particular. There was something authentic about the crisis hotline center, the medical clinic, the flea market and the city hospital. Not funny Seinfeld-type stereotypes, but the kinds of personality quirks from folks that one would see in LA (or elsewhere for that matter).
We are only half-way through S3, so please don't give away plot lines, but I would be curious to hear about what others think of use of some of the lesser characters that just show up in an episode or two. Really any season is game, but we have liked the use of characters in the school, community center, the synagogue, even the Man on the Land episode back on season 2, along with some others.
Also, can anyone think of others shows (of decent quality) which go with this apparent authenticity-over-laugh-lines concept in a similar manner to Transparent?

I work as an extra and I noticed the same thing. Usually what we get to do is walk past doors or down streets, or sit in restaurants pretending to talk. They call the extras with more to do, like those you mentioned, Core Extras. If you are a core extra, you usually get a "bump" for anything extra that you do (usually $20-50).

        Appreciate your perspective. Interesting.
I think Jill Soloway (who directed S3 Ep1) and some of the others on Transparent seem to get something more out of the extras than most directors of other shows.
