It seems like I'm in an extreme minority of viewers in regards to my opinion, but I absolutely despise most of the characters in this show. Mainly the children of Tambor's Maura.
The youngest one is a "free spirit" who is obsessed with sex to the point where it isn't funny, it's cringe-inducing. She does kind of veer away from that later, but then she just becomes boring.
The son is a weird looking guy who has the worst fashion-sense (buttons top button on his shirts, wears a sweater thing on his shoulders), somehow gets every woman he meets to sleep with him (what?), is really shallow and bland and really just has no redeeming characteristics. Also kind of a jerk to his dad.
Then we have the eldest child, or as I call her, bizarro Courtney Cox, who cheats on her husband and abandons her family for her Justin Bieber lookalike girlfriend from college, then spends most of the show trying to be funny and quirky but really just being annoying. She's never funny. Nothing she says is clever or smart or original. Her girlfriend is a Bieber clone who tries so hard to look cool all the time, always with her hands in her pockets, slouching around.
All of these people are so full of themselves, it's just hard to watch them.
But Tambor as Maura? Fantastic! His/her storyline? Brilliant! Wonderful! Touching! Why oh why is that only 10% of the show? Seriously, 90% of every episode is about the horrible, horrible siblings and their boring lives.
Make the show actually centered around the "trans-parent" and it's a great show. Unfortunately, it isn't, and it isn't.

I agree with everything you said. The kids are so annoying.
I wish they showed more of the father/ Maura. She is the best part of the show.

I'm three episodes in and was wondering if someone felt this way. I miss Jeffery when he's not on screen.

I agree. I normally do not like movies and shows with kids, usually are in the movie because they are cute and for them to act like mini adults. But to have a show where the little kids are all those things and precocious and music has to be played when they are around we have adults kids acting like their kids. Oh and the worse there are teenagers. God unless they in something like the first 48 I just don' want to to deal with them on TV or the movies. If i was the Jeffery Tombor character I would told the family with a ticket in my pocket to the somewhere they couldn't visit every year and he would send them a post cards every once in a while.

I couldn't get past the 2nd episode of the 2nd season. Loved the 1st season - such great writing. But this season pales in comparison & I actually skipped ahead to Episode 10 which was unwatchable. A real disappointment. Fingers crossed for seson 3.

I decided to really give the show a shot and binge watched through Season 1. However, by episode 8 I began to tire of the show. There didn't seem to be much going on in terms of plot. And the characters are so unlikeable, especially the children. Also find it hard to believe that all of them are bisexual or bicurious etc, except the middle son who is just a plain sex addict.
Ended up fast forwarding through Season 2. Don't think I'll continue with the show any more though.

I'm thinking that the acclaim for this show is really people just liking that 10% of the show that involved Tambor's Maura character and her transition/dealing with family, and people just want to pretend like the 90% of the show about the annoying children does not exist. That's fine, I guess, but it's too bad that this show has wasted so much potential that it had to be something unique, touching, and monumental for a show.

No, what you're doing is projecting the way you feel onto others. You can't speak for everyone, just yourself.

The children are not supposed to be likable characters; that's kind of the intention of the show.
Maura/Mort's obnoxious kids are part of what makes his adaption to his/her new life so difficult.

They are really no worse than Maura - especially Season 3.

Absolutely. I do believe Maura became the most unlikeable character on the show in season 3. And that's really saying something, considering those horrid kids.

I understand that, and it would work well except for the fact that each of the children on their own gets more screen time than Tambor does. He is a supporting character rather than the main character, and despite the first couple of episodes focusing on his "coming out" to his family, the latter half of the season had very little to do with Maura at all.

Agree with your post. I hated the children and abandoned the series after a few episodes. I just picked it back up out of boredom, and it's tolerable now that I just accepted that the kids suck.

I can see why people want see the stone splashing into the water. But this show is about the ripples it creates, not the splash itself.
The point is that every character become aware of himself in a different way and how the double life even though unknown to the children had an impact on them. So when you say the show was not centered around Maura, you are wrong, as she indeed is the absolut center of everything happening.
It is an ensemble piece, therefore the fathers plot only has a quarter of the time. But in this time it shows what is necessary. At the same time every scene with Tambor is fresh, as the show does not cash in on the trans-topic blatantly. It is not meant to be La cage aux folles.

It's not just that the children are written to be problematic, it's the poor writing (and acting) making them unbelievable that really makes them painful to watch.
