I was considering going to
Prisoners
and
Sicario
when they were in theaters, but I didn't ultimately go, so I'm just now acquainting myself with Villeneuve. I rented two of his movies before going to
Arrival
Maelstrom
and
Prisoners
.
Maelstrom
is a fun diversion, but it's ultimately rather negligible and obvious.
Prisoners
I really didn't like. It's a mish-mash of serial killer movie cliches that is far too long for the spare story it has to tell, and not meaningful at all. Then
Arrival
is a totally miscalculated adaptation of a story that isn't asking to be adapted, and it shares the same problems as that story.
I guess what I'm curious about is whether this guy's work gets any better. I suspect his earlier films were more personal like
Maelstrom
is, but these studio films are clunkers so far.
