Intelligent because a film about extraterrestrials visiting earth that doesn't need to end in conflict and war is something enjoyable for a change and I think it was all handled with a more realistic and cautious approach. I believe that, probably, if aliens arrived here neither them or us would launch a straightforward all out attack. Seeing a film about this end without conflict is refreshing.
And powerful, because the moment I realized that Louise's visions weren't about her past daughter, but her future daughter, it somehow made things even more tragic. Realizing that Louise knew about her daughter's fate all along and still decided to go forward with it trying to "appreciate every second" was a little heartbreaking for me, the end got me a little emotional and it would have been real hard to watch had the scene been longer. Something I haven't seen often in films either. It also raises that interesting debate about what you would do if you knew your future.
