Untold story of Freud's family - is that it influenced America post WW2 - by using psychology to sell products and boost economy.
This made Freud relatives in America rich.
In the same time, Americans were brainwashed to suppress their aggression.
The idea was that mass movement in Nazi Germany could happen in USA and government tried to avoid this.
This suppression of anger by selling marketing products to the masses - backfired in late 1960s with sexual revolution - and the new counter movement of expressing one anger. This have lead to Reagan winning the election and consequently allowing Trump to rise to power today.
Freud's "teaching" lead to death of Freud himself, his daughter, Marilyn Monroe in 1960s and development of CBT today - which is used to brainwash millions of people suffering from social anxiety, by creating more of social anxiety in the process of suppressing the anger.
Quotes from the BBC documentary:
Bernays was the first person to take Freud's ideas about human beings and use them to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations for the first time how they could make people want things they didn't need by linking mass produce goods to their unconscious desires. Out of this came new political idea how to control the masses. By satisfying people's inner selfish desires when made them happy and thus docile. Start of all consuming self.

What was implicit in Freud's argument was the idea of individual freedom which was at the heart of democracy, was impossible. Human beings could never be allowed to truly express themselves because it was too dangerous. They must always be controlled and would thus always be discontent. Man doesn't want to be civilized and civilization brings discontent but it is necessary for survival. So man must be discontent, to keep within limits.
