Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Excision

    toddjacobucci2002 — 11 years ago(September 25, 2014 12:37 PM)

I watched Excision again today - 3rd time in 9 months. I didnt have any particular desire to watch it - just one of those days I couldnt find anything else on the movie channels that interested me. So, I said, well, I'll watch it again. SOme fresh impressions, this time on the characters - not on the performances of the actors.
Pauline: SHes just repugnant. Aside from being bright, she doesnt have too many redeeming qualities. I found myself thinking "What would I do if this was my teenager???" Only answer I could come up with is what her parents intended to do - send her to a professional shrink. Something else I noticed about Pauline this time around - behind closed doors - shes actually kind of sensitive. Shes a tough one to figure out, so, like I said - I think her parents were headed in the right direction. One more thought on her - does anyone think she looks a bit like the grinch??? Im not talking about the 2000s Jim Carrey grinch, IM talking about the 1960s cartoon. I was seeing the grinch in her face.
The MOther: A bit bullying to the husband - however, sincerely interested and trying to reach Pauline in some way. Completely supportive, completely loving. A good mother in my view. She just gives up - Pauline is just too whacked out. I completely understood - I couldnt figure Pauline out either.
The Husband - a completely emasculated male. He's just going along with the program until the end when even he gets pissed at Pauline (after her fight at school). Seemed to me to be one of those guys that feels stuck, so he just goes along with it and tries not to make many waves. I wouldnt call him weak - just emasculated and stuck.
Grace: The delight of the movie. A charming, decent innocent young girl. SHe is the kind of daughter Id like to have
ALl in all - I enjoyed Excision again upon my third viewership. I feel, once again, what really makes this movie is the ending. Its intense and so well acted. So, good stuff. Love to hear some takes

Good Review! SPOILERS AHEAD One thing I wanted to add, this movie (to me at least) was excellent at making the viewer feel the emotions that the characters were supposed to be experiencing. Especially the ending where the mother finds her in the garage and Pauline seems to have her moment of clarity where she realizes what she's just done and they both start screaming and sobbing, it was like I could feel both their hearts shattering into a million pieces.
self-respect is simply the act of respecting your own wants and needs.

Well thank you nilbog. I think I disagree with you a bit on the ending. the way Pauline was sobbing indicated to me shes completely out of her mind. A complete nut. The mother's reasons for screaming are quite obvious. ONe daughter murdered, the other one completely insane.

Imo the daughter wasn't screaming, most likely just crying, her mom doing all the screaming. Nut job realised she'd just killed the sister she loved BUT mostly because it's the first time her psycho self felt loved by her mother.

Haha I thought you meant you watched it three times in one day. That seemed a bit redundant lol, I haven't seen the movie myself yet, looking forward to getting around to it though, looks quite interesting

I didn't find Pauline repugnant. I felt the same way as her sister did; her sister had a lot of affection for her but also seemed to understand that Pauline was 'special', and even sought to protect her from others (as in the scene earlier on with Kimberly.
It's hard to be too hard on people who have bad wiring. Pauline wouldn't want to be that way if she had a choice. And she did have redeeming (if flawed) features. She genuinely loved her sister, she was funny in her own way, she thought deeply about things.
