Have you looked at the statistics? How many rocket scientists, architectural engineers, and astro physisysts do you see coming out of the hood or the barrio? Not saying everyone who grows up in those areas turns to crime, but when your options are work for pennies or work for thousands, which one are you gonna pick?
Also not every gang member who joins does so because they like the idea of drive by shootings, some of them are threatened into joining. Like hay join us or were gonna do a drive by on your house next time we go by there.
You may not like gangs but if someone says theyre gonna shoot up your house with your family in it, and you live in an area where 911 doesnt come around, your kind of limited in what your options are.

I don't understand why she was even in the gang.
That gang represented "La eMe" (The M, The Mexican Mafia), The Mexican Mafia and any gang that represents it does not allow gay, lesbian or bisexual members. If they find out one of their members is one of those three they are then killed.
Without releasing too much info with possible spoilers, she was either lesbian or bisexual therefore she should have been killed. -

I turned to my wife and said did they just pull some kids off the street and put her in the movie..so that means she must of been goodnow i never been to south central so the only thing i can base it off of is some of the ghettos area here in nyand i have to say i thought it was pretty realyou have to remember that in movies alot of the gangsta characters we see are portrayed like they have a soul or a reason for being the way they are..and deep down theres a good person there or even though theyre gangstas theyre still cool people..most of the time thats not the case.real criminals or gangstas are not charming articulate or fun to be around.theyre scary talk alot of non sense and would kill you on a dimeso i thought the girl and the rest of the homeboys did a good job

I live in southern California, I'm Mexican, and I thought that her portrayal was pretty damned cheesy. Actually, the whole gang just seemed ridiculous. Really bad acting. Didn't seem realistic to me. Especially the shoot-out at the end. I can't believe that this movie got as much acclaim as it did.

Though I actually loved the movie, the hispanic gang did seem to me rather broadly played, without the kind of dimension the rest of the film displayed. The actress playing this character played it all to the hilt and was obviously a favorite with the director and everyone else - she gets the screen time when we follow that gang. But to follow in a way this line of thought, I did think these sections were the weakest in the film.

I don't see it as inaccurate in any way; watch 'Cops' and you'll see this same juvenile attitude all the time.
If you take some ghetto trash who has the same education & maturity level as a pre-teen, give them a gun, tell them they are important and that their sole mission in life is to defend a tiny sliver of a $hi!!y@ss neighborhood, you are going to end up with someone pretty damn annoying.

Yeah, that was some bad acting by the gangsters. Also, Big Evil's cholo accent came and went. LOL! They couldn't afford the go-to Cholo in Hollywood? Noel Gugliemi!! http://www.imdb.com/board/20346595/
