The first season has a completely different tone than what would follow. It had a cohesive story that was suspenseful throughout. It relied less on gore. It was darker and more psychological thriller than the camp comedy horror that would evolve.
It appears that later on they just went full camp.
I started with Hotel, and it was ****. The first episode started out decent, then it went to full comedy horror. There were too many characters and subplots. The budget was bigger, but the story suffered. And it got more gay.
During the first season of the series, you’re only casting the characters you need. After that, actors get tied to contracts, and the writers end up writing extra roles for that actor. So later on, the writing gets sloppy. You have the legendary Kathy Bates in a series with vampires and ghosts and she’s playing a hotel clerk. What a waste.
Seems like they tried to one-up the previous series by having more bloodshed in the opening intro. In the season 1 intro, there was no gore, yet remains the best intro in the series.
That first season Is a masterpiece with a perfect cast.

I liked aspects of season one
Murder House
, but it didn't impress me like the others. It lacked scares and suspense and I found it kinda flat in parts. The supernatural aspect just wasn't clicking with me either. It wasn't creepy enough and evasive as well.
I think I saw season three
Coven
first and loved it. It was more parody/satire and was very stylish. Lange gave a terrific performance and Bates was just evil personified. One of the vilest creatures I have ever witnessed.
Season two
Asylum
was a mind-warp and along with season four
Freakshow
, laid bare the human condition to its fullest extent, bones and all. They were both terrific!
I ventured into Season Five
Hotel
with much trepidation because Lange wasn't in it and ended up loving it. I loved it so much, that I think it may be my favorite and I was very surprised and taken back by this.
Season six
Roanoke
was gritty and disturbing, but it didn't rock me as much as some of the others and I found myself a bit detached watching it.
Season seven
Cult
was awesome.
Have seen a few episodes of season eight
Apocalypse
and wasn't too impressed. Need to finish though sometime soon.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?
