Seriously I don't get it. There's a lot of people saying this is very similar to/a rip-off E.T. but I honestly can't see a resemblance. Can someone please explain how this is like E.T.?? The only thing I see that looks familiar is the setting

Because people are stupid and think that just because a movie is about an alien and kids befriend it (sort of i the last 5 minutes), that it's automatically a ripoff.

Exactly! They (sort of) befriend the Alien in the last 5-10 minutes, and that's about it. There's no large amount of bonding time, and definitely no 'best-friend' relationship between the two. And the two stories are very different. It's honestly not even close to being an E.T. ripoff. I'm glad there's someone else here who shares my opinion.

I agree with you too. It is quite different from E.T., except for the setting, the main characters, the music, the bad guys (government), and that the story is centered around an alien.

Except that the characters are different - they're older and dealing with different emotional circumstances. The music is very different. And the story is not centered around the alien. It's centered around the kids and their reactions to the mystery in the town, and especially some of the turbulent relationships they have with others. And the government thing? Maybe that is similar, but the government is the bad guy in like how many summer movies these days?

Yeah, totally agree with you aside from a few points.

The Big Bad Military vs Basically Kind Alien reminded me straight away of ET. Throw in the kids outwitting the adults (and a hawwwtttt mom) and I think it's reasonable to be
                reminded
                of ET.

                  this argument is hilarious.
the entire movie is made in the Spielberg fashion, on purpose.
it's ET and The Goonies combined, on purpose, like Stranger Things.

Yeah, because I must have missed those deleted scenes when I had the ET disc of him killing and eating humans.
