Never occurred to me that butler was anything but american until i read the bio of him. He's really good at playing no-bs crackers. I loved that scene near the beginning when childers and his bud broke into the crack house with shotguns blazing and forced that negro to return the cocaine and money he had taken from them.
Reckless drivers are a bigger threat to you than all other criminals put together. -

Just by looking at him, I know he was no American. American men tend to be too pretty. Very, very few real Americans are used now in the tough guy roles. We have what now, Vin Diesel and The Rock, maybe Jeremy Renner??????

This is probably the first movie I have watched with Gerard Butler that he actually attempted to hide his accent however its still noticeable in many parts of the film. I'm actually surprised about the comment believing he was a full blown American, no disrespect intended but I think that he's one of the very few actors that even try to hide their native tongue. I even recall reading something one time about how the producers and Directors films that he's in seemingly don't really care because for the most part he is a bankable actor. I think the only time he didn't sound Scottish was when he played an Irishman in P.S I love you and that hardly counts. I'm not saying that Irish and Scottish accents sound the same because they definitely don't but it would surprise me if he didn't grow up with Irish friends, watching movies, tv shows etc. making it much easier to pull off v.s. trying to sound like he's from anywhere in America.

American Men tend to be too pretty?? And then you mention Vin Diesel and Jeremy Renner? Come on, man. If you're mentioning "pretty boys", I figured Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio, or Ryan Gosling were fairly obvious.
Either way, to counter your point:
Non-Americans who are pretty boys:
Michael Fassbender
Colin Farrell
Chris Hemsworth
Heath Ledger
Eric Bana
Hugh Jackman
I could go on, but I think I made my point
And Gerard Butler was portraying a biker tough guyof course he's meant to look gritty. Americans are, and always have been, the leader in cinematic bad ass tough guys.
Ask Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis.
