There's some real life footage videos on youtube of the real pirate being taken to prison and he's smiling. One might think "Why is he smiling? He's going to prison for a long long time", but maybe he feels that he's better off in prison, he was extremely poor, now in prison he will get meals and a roof over his head. It sounds crazy, but look at it from his point of view.

I could guess it is because he became very (in)famous and thought to be a "celebrity".

First thing I would've done when I was on the US Navy vessel was thank the guys who killed my captors, asked if any still alive, then borrowed a .45 and put two in the last pirates head. Done!
