IMDb have backed down previously when trying to impose changes on the message board, such as when they got rid of the old emojis. It ended with a compromise with both the new and old ones available. Obviously this is far bigger, but they more people show them that they disagree with the decision, the more possibility there is of them going back on their decision or creating new, improved boards.

It's not impossible that this could be reversed but I see that as highly unlikely because closing the boards will save them a fortune.
Someone on another board suggested a strategy to to fight them if you're interested: everyone deletes all their reviews and film votes. It probably wouldn't take that many before they started getting alarmed.
