Conan was given an opportunity to keep his job, and he walked.
Even a year later there are still those who will maintain with great indignation that Conan did not walk, but was just outright fired. Personally, I doubt
NBC
was all that interested in keeping Conan by the time they asked him to move to midnight, but, yeah, it's pretty clear it was Conan's decision to part company with "The Tonight Show".
