That question comes after watching the scene where Mattie Faye says she"paid" for her affair with the brother in law.
    What does it mean, exactly?
When she is a woman born and bread in a place and time where woman's body and sexuality are not free, the answer can be : "her son".(a)
When that is not it, can it be the extend of " kakos" she, and the public eye, are lead to see him ?( b) Violet calls him an underdog, which is a synonym for looser.
The cut scene explains he cannot drive. One other shows a sign about learning to read.
And when Ivy asks him what shows he watches, he does not know.
Is he a dislexsic who was not checked in kindergarten ? He could learn that in new York if b (eventually with Ivy supporting him the way he supported her, even when they do not resume their affair ). If a, could he just tell his mother that she is wrong or is he too religious for that ?
Or is the movie just a show of how things die between people ?

I didn't get any hint that little Charles is illiterate. Maybe on the autism spectrum; asperger syndrome. His mother treats him just as badly as Violet treats her girls.

Well, I wondered . Why the inability to drive ?
And then, that sign When he can' t read he canot get a driving licence.
And he might have got in the wrong bus on that account, too.
Illiteracy would explain why he is such an outcast.
People suffering from autism can get training, and jobs, especially with asperger syndrome
Everyone, except his cousin, treat him bad (and it took her about 36 years and one cancer to confide in him) . In the side of Beverly's family, everyone got high education, except maybe"Mr Huberbrecht" 🙂
The only one I wonder about is Charles senior.
I wonder when he gets into a fit because he does not want to be disturbed in his grief Or when it is the first time the pain in his son shows.
He let Mattie Faye interact with their"boy" for long.
That would be understandable for someone who flunked school, and remember the beginning, when she says he is not intelligent in her opinion.
It would be difficult to understand that when he had a social disorder.
Autism is not a lack of intelligence. It can lead into lack of education, when the connection is really impossible
And what is the use yelling at someone with a medical condition ?
Considering his biological father is a teacher, that would make it very frustrating for her competitive mother.
Besides, I have the feeling that the movie talks about America, does it not ?
Don't they teach "idiot English" anymore in some of the college courses?

Maybe I should ask :"could he be" illiterate.
I watched it again, and I cannot understand why he would talk about himself as "a looser" when he had a medical condition. It is not consistent with the gentle part of him, is it?
Furthermore, Barbara says that he and Ivy make their own way. Being restive and flunking school might be the only way he had not to be entirely subordinate as a kid
          ?
          (Granted he has"hangs up" ?)

I would not pretend I know everything about autism. So I asked my cousin's wife.
She is a psychiatrist and that was her doctorate thesis.
From what she says, someone with autism would not realise one's partner need for support at one's father funerals. So, it definitely does not figure.
I just classified some old references I kept and found some literature that goes by the title : "ma mre est bargeot mais je me soigne" .
It is about mothers and their effect on their daughters.
One of them, the daughter of a mother who needs caring for no reward, is supposed to get away from her family, for taking care of the mother would trigger a love life that would be populated with loosers that would give nothing to the daughter, used to help without asking anything for herself. I think this is Ivy
The illiteracy has not been overruled yet
            What do you say?
