I was disappointed in this movie. I did think Meryl was great as usual but I did not like any other characters and thought it was boring, crude and just plain awful. Even Ewan McGregor couldn't save this movie for me because he can do wrong in my eyes lol I couldn't wait until it was over.

Try watching it again with a different approach, you might be surprised. This is a rare well developed look into a significantly dysfunctional family and how that dysfunction, from the parents and grandparents has reverberated into the next generation causing so much suffering and inability for them to get any workable traction in life towards being fruitful or have any peace or contentment. The short stay where the family has been brought together uncovers even more jaw dropping (for them) horror surprises surfacing from the past.
It is very clever the way it has been stacked and how it unfolds. Each actor steals their own scenes totally and memorably. I never tire of watching it - the scenery of the plains and descriptions of such gives a glimpse of what their lives eking out a living and household out there must have been like. The core ancestors must have been very strong to have withstood it while building a homestead and raising a family - you have to hand that to them - despite the massive blunders other than that which were sure to ruin their kids' futures.
As Barbra sais 'This is the Plains - its a state of mind, like the blues'..
Every scene is a gem. IMO, Relax into it a bit and let it sweep you away to another world in another time - which DID actually happen. People went through that stuff for real - how did they survive it!!? I am surprised they weren't all A class alcoholics or all shrill lunatics. They did the best they could with everything in the world stcked against them. I enjoyed the rare insight into that history on a human level of suffering most none of us can imagaine went on out there.
Every actor here was magnificent in their own right, each playing their difficult part brilliantly. This is a work of art, to be savioured in the right mind frame. Choice actors, choice direction. One of a kind.
As the pieces of the jigsaw are collected attentatively throughout the full story of why things happened as they did, unfolds.
