Season 2, ep1: Allan Gaylord and the old man

The first time I watched this episode, I got it into my head that Allan was the old man's son, and that's why he "abducted" him - but after having watched it again several times, there is no mention of this link.
Now I know I probably made this up (the show gives you so many details and so little help connecting the dots), but can anyone shed light on why Allan came for the old man?
I love this show. It's one of those top notch shows that you can watch again and again and still be amazed at the writing and acting.
