Actually it is quite like The Thing- it involves a group of people in a remote area who discover an organism that wants to "take over," and they have to stop it. Quite similar.
But like you said, The Thing was excellent, this one is just "eh"

        You mis-spelled "w" for an "h"

This movie also differs a lot from The Thing as well.
When I see a zombie movie, I don't instantly say, this is just like "Night of the Living Dead". No, but I do agree that it is similar enough to group up in the zombie genre. I agree about the remote area and the potential pandemic or "take over", but that is about as close to The Thing as this movie is ever going to get. It doesn't share the same directorial style, paranoid suspense, all male cast, claustrophobic tension
I think Invasion of the Body Snatchers and other "imitation" organism movies are more akin to The Thing, where as pathogen movies like Cabin Fever and Splinter are more like The Thaw. Yes, you can tell that this movie shares elements to the Thing, especially the isolation aspects, but I don't think it is as drastic as others like to point out.
