In the research book with all the sketches of the bugs one can read these parasite bugs (because it never gets much more technical) are InvertIbrates.
A new genus I suppose.
Man, please, do the research. If you make it plausible it's more credible and therefore scarier. This was just crawly.

I just saw the film, and I think that they say the bugs are vertebrates. That's the reason for the insecticide not working on them.

That creates an even larger plot hole as the structure of the organism clearly indicated it had an exoskeleton. There could have been multiple reasons the "bug spray" didn't work. Broad spectrum insecticides might not kill arachnids, wasp and hornet sprays might not kill beetles etc
