    what was that? i mean i know what it was for, more pain than the human body can take, he's bound to bite it off and you wouldn't want him to choke on it if you wanted him alive as long as possible, but what was it exactly, was it, some kind of wire folded so one end goes through the tongue and the other through the chin or something else like that, any ideas?

      Technically I don't see him biting off his own tongue because Gerard butler filled him so full of the immobilizing puffer fish drug.
      But I guess he could involuntary swallow his tongue.

        I believe it was a mouth guard that prevented him from swallowing and/or biting off his tongue due to the possibility of him spazzing or going into convulsions. It's similar to what the do to mental patient prior to administering ECT. Boxers use them as well due to the blows to the jaw.
