Is Teresa supposed to be such a weak character?

I havent read the novel or watched the original series so am unsure how the character is meant to come across. For someone who becomes a drug queenpin, she makes poor judgement calls and doesnt think through her plans. Instead of trying to plot five steps ahead, she just comes up with an idea and rushes into it without considering the consequences or having her ducks already in a row.
Shes either been lucky or saved by someone else when in a jam, and shes foolishly stubborn rather than "strong-willed." Camila, Epifanio, and James are all way smarter and tougher and her, and she doesnt appear to have become any smarter this season so far.
I get that this is about her rise so shes learning, but I have a problem when the protagonist is less interesting than the characters around her.
Is book and other TV Teresa the same?

The real La Reina is a bad ass, super smart, and doesn't even go to America. And she didn't die at the end either. I don't know how these are even parallel except for the leading woman being Theresa, Epifanio, Guerro dying, and the notebook.

La Reina Del Sur is pretty good. There are things I liked about it more than Queen of The South and there are things I liked about the remake more than the original.
For me the story in the original didn't really get that interesting UNTIL she made her way to Morocco/Gibralter/Spain, so I am holding out hope that this series has a similar uptick.
