Is GOT the 2nd best fantasy ever after LOTR as people claim and will it be placed on the same level after it is finished?
I say yes. The books are quite accomplished albeit overstuffed and the show is the cultural phenomenon of this generation. -

I don't think the books will have a timeless appeal to them (unless the next two are awesome). The show will probably stand taller than the books. Again, GoT could end horribly and everybody calls it terrible. We can't really make any judgements since it isn't over.

Come on, Lord of The Rings was acceptable fun as a book and crap as a film.

In its context (fantasy) it is amazing. A huge world with all its own languages, history, and people. I mean there's a reason it's read in schools and is known universally.
As a film series it's pretty damn good too. It's certainly not crap, not the greatest either, but a good job considering the material.
I don't see how you can deny its (well deserved) merit. -

Lord of the Rings is more tightly constructed, but the world George R. R. Martin has created is far more complex and rich with lore. However, in the later books, GRRM has gotten so meandering with the story that it's hard to endorse him over Tolkien (not to mention that Martin makes no attempt to finish his series anytime soon). I think that if the Game of Thrones television series ends well, it will be considered the best out of anything we're talking about here. The show has beautifully illustrated GRRM's vast world, but has also successfully tightened the narrative and streamlined the storylines extremely well.
