They play out season 7 in the summer and season 8 in the winter. I wouldn't want them to spread out 13 episodes in a period of 2 years.

It's not clear yet if s8 is 6 or 7 episodes, and besudes it has been rumored (and likely) that we'll get at least 2 double episodes, and that all episides will be longervthan usual.
The 7 episodes is apparently so they have to pay the actors less, because they are paid per episode.
