can only communitcate by moving a muscle in his cheek. He uses it to tap out a code that is then typed out then turned into voice. He can't communicate quickly. You ask him a question, you'll have to wait several minutes for more than a one or two word response.

He does have some standard prepared phrases that he can use to speed things up. When he gives a talk, assistants pre-load the text into the voice synthesizer ahead of time. But your are right, a "normal" speed conversation with him is not really possible.

Well, TBBT and the audience have a choice. Wait several minutes for Hawking to interact with 'the gang', or speed things up. Since this isn't a documentary, thankfully, they just cut to the chase.
