Unless I missed the part where the Taliban (whom had recently visited Texas of all places) attacked us on 9/11.
So it's clearly NOT our war (not in OUR best interests).
Thus, why sign up and fight for someone ELSE's interests?
a) Patriotism? Nope, you can't use that card when your government is committing crimes in your name (Iraq did NOT attack us, thus the invasion of Iraq itself was a war crime). Otherwise we owe many WWII Nazi Germans a huge apology and reparations (bet you most also thought they were being patriots).
b) Duty ("I may not see the big picture but I trust my government")? See above.
c) Tradition (military family)? OK, that's acceptable (you don't get to choose the war that breaks out in your generation).
d) Money/benefits? OK, that one too (since wars are mostly fought for money, may as well get your fair share of the loot to make it worth your sweat), although that would make you a straight up mercenary (only military contractors Blackwater types actually get well paid for their troubles, NOT the regular troops).
e) Fun (adrenaline junkie, psycho whom wants to kill for pleasure)? OK, that one too works (you're getting something out of it for yourself).
But the guys here did NOT sign up for either reason (they only vaguely mentioned getting education debt free), their main interest was to fight for change.
Unless veteran status somehow empowered them to do so at home (maybe if you run for office, but they never mentioned that), not really sure about the soundness of their logic there.
So again, IDIOTS.
