Now that sounds interesting. They can bring some Lovecraftian-type creatures into the King mythos, that would be awesome!

Yes. As a continuing saga, they will no doubt have the time to explore the nature of the monsters origin and purpose. Maybe it will turn out that the army was using 'tech' from some old dusty book to invoke the portal. Lot of Lovecraftian possibilities.
