i haven't read any professionals' reviews of it, though i've read several of the viewers' reviews here on this message board. the film doesn't seem to be getting very high praise (to say the least).
i think those damning it are doing so for the wrong reason. in other words, they're bashing it based on the horrific actions we see taken in the movie, or based on whether or not those actions are realistic or unrealistic.
the real strength of this movie is how chillingly (and it is gut wrenching) the film depicts what an ordeal the victims of this type of criminal activity must endure. that's the part of the movie - thru the use of incidental music, camera work, superb acting, and a script that goes to a lot of trouble to get us to imagine a great many disturbing things that might occur in the middle of just one of these kinds of stories - that really hits home.
that, i think, was the objective of the filmmaker: to scare, as well as to inform - especially given the grimness of the ending.
it shouldn't be too surprising that such a film as this polarizes opinions, leaving little middle ground.
i give it an "8" out of 9 (because there's no such thing as a "10"), mainly because of how effective a chiller it is in portraying what, apparently, is a global problem in our time (unbelievably).

Yes I gave it an eight as well. I thought it was one of those rare finds, a hidden gem amongst all the run of the mill straight to DVD horrors out there.

I actually liked it too.I was pleasantly surprised as a matter of fact.I was expecting a typical horror film but it much better than thatit was not perfect by no meansand there were plenty of plot holes and unanswered questionsbut it was entertainingand I was not bored watching it like so many other films like this.I will also go as far as saying that the acting was pretty decent as wellI gave it 8 stars!

Gave it an 8 also, but don't get the whiny female enslavement thing you posted about but a basic (and great) plot. There are much nastier and sicker films than this that deal with extended torture/rape etc. I saw no politics in this film. Just a plot device that may or may not have people thinking. Any horror/thriller fan, this a must watch. Totally insane!

Agreed. This was a really solid and tense thriller.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
