Very graphic movie, but not as disturbing as Martyrs

This was at times hard to watch, but when it was over, I forgot about it. Martyrs stayed with me a lot longer and was very depressing.
Not sure I could handle Serbian Film though -

I actually think it would have been better if it was less graphic. I found it disturbing for the 1st half, but around the time the police officer got his head blasted apart with a simple pistol I actually burst out laughing. From that point on it was too over the top to be taken seriously.

TOTALLY agree. "Inside" was an ordinary splatter movie (including blood, gore, stupid cops, many deaths etc) EXCEPT the "birth scene" that felt new and very strong and disturbing.
Martyrs exceeds Inside if You wanna throw up and wanna feel like really depressed and sad -

I actually felt more disturbed by this one for its imagery and, perhaps, because it revolved around pregnancy.
Some seem to make a big deal out of the behavior of the cops, particularly the last blind/deaf one, as killing the suspense/tension of the film. I felt kind of the same way with Martyrs when we
finally met the underground cult trying to discover the transcendental spiritual state of martyrdom which I felt was just as heavy-handed and hard to take completely seriously.
That said, I love both films, but I actually think I found the imagery in this one a bit more disturbing. Also this one focused more on a pregnant woman's physical struggle against a relentless antagonist. Martyrs was more about torture and internal struggles of the psyche. I don't find them particularly comparable except that they're both French, center around female stars, and are extremely graphic. -

For me, this movie was killed because it was just too unrealistic, no cops could be that stupid! And too much blood.
Martyrs looked like it could actually happen, it was a very very depressing film, I don't think any movie has hit me like Martyrs did. -

I completely agree with you - Martyrs stayed with me for a couple of days after I saw it. As for Inside, I watched it just now, and while the atmosphere in the movie is great, it does feel too silly right from the moment
Sarah stabs her own mother
. That, and a lot of other scenes made me think "is everybody half-deaf in this movie"?
I suggest you check out Irreversible - a masterpiece. Also, dont be afraid of a Serbian Film. It is a messed up experience, but not as dark as Martyrs.
The reason is the ending, which was a complete "The Aristocrats" kind of deal and made the impact of the whole movie less damaging. Still, it is not as silly as this movie.

Why else do you watch horror movies if not for that "wonder"?
As for Serbian being as bad as AU series, August Underground is much worse. I saw Mordum when I was 15, and that is pure garbage. At least Serbian is watchable, though I have no desire to see it again.

I would have to agree that Martyrs is more disturbing in the end than Inside, mostly for me because Martyrs is about extreme torture and degradation while Inside is more of an extreme and very graphic slasher movie (though the suspense for the most part in Inside was incredibly effective, as well as the lighting and the special effects). Martyrs stayed with me for days and I still remember it vividly to say the least, but it actually improves every time I see it again (though I really have to be in the mood for this type of film).
As for A Serbian Film, well from the little clips that I saw from the August Underground series, I would definitely say that A Serbian Film is way better and more interesting. Of course, the movie is extreme and definitely not made for everyone, but the production values of the film are quite decent and you really come to care for the main protagonist and his family. For the record, I bought Inside, Martyrs, and A Serbian Film and I watched them a couple of times since I bought them several years ago. Of all these three, I'd say I probably watched Inside more often, because it is less disturbing and depressing as a whole (and by saying that, I am not criticizing those movies at all, but merely pointing out the strong visceral impact they had on me after I watched them).

Martyrs was really a revolutionary film. A horror film with a profound meaning, extremely powerful and like nothing I've ever seen before. Truly magnificent and I wasn't expecting it.
As for Inside. It really shocked me (and I've seen a serbian film!). I had heard plenty of times that it was graphic and gory but I hadn't really given thought to it because I kind of thought it was tastefully graphic, like High Tension was graphic but I found it fine to watch. I was shocked by how completely brutal and relentlessly nasty this film was. While the first 1/4 really really scared me, the music, the antagonist was all so evil and convincing it then became a blood bath with endlessly graphic and close up explicit shots of violence and so much blood I wasn't expecting that at all. It was just constant and relentless, literally constant. And to watch a pregnant woman get so brutally injured and beaten made it all the more difficult. Having said that it really became more of an endurance test than being scary and occasionally I had to pause it because I felt sick. The twist got to me though as I found it to be very effective so I am divided about this film. -

Martyrs was brillant.
And sgriff22555 I agree with your comments. I enjoyed High Tension (well up until the ending) Yes it was graphic, but it wasn't hard to watch. It was thrilling.
Inside was disgusting, and I agree, nasty. I can handle gore, but something about this made me sick. It's just not entertaining at all to watch a pregnant woman go through that. Home invasion flicks can be, even if they are incredibly gory, fun to watch in a way. But this was not.
I felt sick as well, I actually had to fast forward because I just couldn't watch any of this play out.
I did think the ending was very creepy though.

My friend brought over the DVD of Martyrs to my apartment and we watched it and he accidentally left it at my place I was so disturbed by that film I made him come over the next day to pick it up because I didn't want it in my apartment. That is how eff'd up that film was.
This honestly doesn't even hold a candle to Martyrs. -

I agree. I couldn't stop thinking about Martyrs for days after I'd seen it. I don't think I'll remember this movie in an hour. Just a dumb slasher with the most threadbare plot imaginable. And the gore got very monotonous very quickly whereas I was engaged in and disturbed by Martyrs throughout
