Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Hellboy II: The Golden Army

I think they should start a completely new BPRD film series that is fully independent from these films.
I loved the first Hellboy movie but I disliked this one a lot as to me it is rather juvenile and unrelated to the comics. So I'd rather not see a 3rd one that picks up from this story, even though I adore the actors and the director. A reboot would also be pointless IMO as Hellboy is to an extent not really movie material and would need to be changed harshly to be made into a Hollywood blockbuster, which GdT did very well for the first film and his changes in character and story were reasonable (for The Golden Army they were just plain odd to me). I don't think many other directors could pull a Hellboy movie off like he did, so why try?
On the other hand, what would be really cool is a new BPRD movie series, that picks the story up probably starting from Hollow Earth and takes the first Hellboy comics (from The Seed of Destruction to Conqueror Worm) as its background story. It would have to be a significantly lower budget than GdT's movies as the target audience (mostly the fans of the comics) would also be quite low compared. They could throw in some popular actors to attract some of their fans, which could probably bring new readers to the comics as well (that would be so great). What it would really need is an amazing director that can work well with a low budget and put as much thought in detail as GdT did so the films would still not fall into B-grade.
Storywise, they could use some flashbacks to sum up the background story so even non-readers would understand the concept and would not be lost (just as how I've known many who saw Tron: Legacy without having seen Tron and finding it great although a bit confusing). The story could definitely flash back to the endings of The Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil so one of the movies could definitely include the amazing ending of BPRD Plague of Frogs.
Overall, I find BPRD to be much more movie-material than Hellboy, so they wouldn't have to change much about the story or characters, and additional scenes could include more in-depth character development (instead of awkward romance as in the Hellboy movies, especially this one). I'd love to see the characters of the comics appear as their real selves in live action.
    Any thoughts about this?
I may have put too much thought into something that will surely never happen, but it would be so cool if it ever did that I can't help myself 🙂
